Bone Caves at Allt Nan Uamh

The caves above Allt Nan Uamh are amongst the most interesting in Scotland. Excavations have revealed bones of the animals that inhabited this part of Scotland during the last ice age, 11,000 years ago. They include brown bear, polar bear, artic fox, reindeer, lynx and lemming.

The path is about 1 mile to the Bone caves from the car park at grid reference
NC 253 179, 2 miles south of Inchnadamph on the A837.

There is a path all the way, somewhat rocky at times and also muddy but it's quite passable. The photo on the right is of a spring. There are other small springs welling up in pools but this is the most interesting. The river almost disappears further up then comes out here.

This was in September so the heather was super.

A well worn path leads you finally up to the caves themselves. The last bit of path is narrow and steep - be especially careful if taking small children up.
